Ironman Race Takes Over Louisville

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Yesterday marked a new chapter in competitive sports for Louisville with the first annual Ford Ironman Louisville race. Ironman competitions have become a very popular way for athletes to compete and show competence in a grueling day of racing that includes running, biking, and swimming. The Ford Ironman Louisville is one of the largest amateur sporting events to be held in Louisville.

The race began on the Great Lawn and finished up at 4th Street Live. The racing started with a 2.4-mile swim in the Ohio River, followed by 112-mile bike ride, and ending with a 26.2-mile run. Needless to say only those athletes in top condition can enter and even expect to finish.

The best time of the day came from Chris McDonald who finished more than five minutes before his closest competition at 8:38:39. This was his nineteenth Ironman competition, but his first win in five years of competition. McDonald actually slowed down at the finish line and gave high-fives to people in the crowd.

Heather Gollnick easily took the first place in the woman’s competition beating out Nina Kraft by over twenty-eight minutes. This was Gollnick’s fifth Ironman win and a personal best for her overall time at 9:23:22.

Both McDonald and Gollnick will receive $10, 000 in prize money for their first place finishes. The Ford Ironman Louisville is a qualifier race for the 2007 Ford Ironman World Championship taking place on October 13 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

I can say with certainty that I will never be in good enough shape to compete in an Ironman competition, but these athletes do inspire you to at least get away from your computer and go take a long walk.

So have you ever competed in amateur athletics such as a triathlon? What do you like to do for exercise?

Best of the Best: Plehn’s Bakery

Louisville’s Best: Plehn’s Bakery

Louisville's Best Bakery: Plehns Bakery

Plehn’s Bakery has been serving up extraordinary bread, desserts and ice cream since 1924.

If you haven’t tried their famous spice cupcakes, or their fresh made bagels, breads and doughnuts - then you have never really experienced bakery nirvana! Now, that may sound cheesy, but trust me, the food at Plehn’s is anything but!

Already recognized with a “Best of Louisville” Award, Plehn’s may be the best kept secret Louisville has to offer. I can vouch for this personally - I trusted them enough to have them make my wedding cake!

Not only does Plehn’s do wedding cakes, but they cater large and small events as well! They offer a large variety of soups, salads and deli sandwiches, made fresh every day. They also provide a corporate box lunch service.

The skill, and edible wonders at Plehns really defy description - you just have to try it for yourself! They have a small counter, reminicent of 50’s diners where you can pull up a barstool, and have a fresh fountain drink, a cup of coffee, or some homemade ice cream.

The next time you’re in the area, and are looking for an unbelieveable (and reasonable) place to eat lunch, try Plehn’s. And the next time you plan an event - go to them first! There is no place better!

Plehn’s is located at:
3940 Shelbyville Road (Click to MapQuest)

Hours are:
Monday – Friday 7:00 am – 6:00 pm
Saturday 6:30 am – 5:00 pm

07partner_robot.jpg

“Photo courtesy of the Kentucky State Fair Board.”August 19, 2007 - The Toyota Partner Robot created quite a stir when it appeared on the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Blue Ribbon Stage and began belting out tunes on its trumpet.

This the last weekend of a very hot August and many people will be trying to find entertainment that is in a cool environment. This is the final weekend to visit the Kentucky State Fair and there are plenty of attractions inside the air-conditioned exhibit halls. Switchfoot and Emerson Hart will play Friday night at 8:00pm, and Blake Shelton and Tracy Lawrence will bring some country music to the fair on Saturday night at 8:00pm. Def Leppard, Styx, and Foreigner will be playing at 7:00 pm on Sunday night in Freedom Hall.

Hillary Duff will be performing at the Louisville Palace at 7:30pm on Saturday night for the younger crowd. It will showcase over 30 rock, jazz, reggae bands along with other artists and dancers.

For those folks who don’t mind braving the hot weather and driving a bit, there is the Art in Speed Park festival in Sellersburg, IN. This is a two-day event in which various art, music, and dance will be showcased. Sellersburg is approximately fifteen-minute drive north of Louisville.

So try to keep cool this weekend and don’t miss out on the great musical and artist event going on in our area.

Saturday- The Lincoln Foundation’s 12th Annual Evening of Jazz

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

If you are looking for a way to help educational efforts in Louisville, listen to some great music, and keep cool then head over to the Kentucky Center this Saturday. The Lincoln Foundation will present its 12th annual Evening of Jazz fundraiser starting at 7:00pm. The musical guests this year are The Deep Blue Organ Trio, featuring Bobby Broom, Chris Foreman, and Greg Rockingham. The “Spirit of Excellence” Award will also be given to Brenda G. Hart, Engineering Education Director, and Director of Student Affairs, J.B. Speed School of Engineering, University of Louisville.

The Lincoln Foundation of Louisville is a non-profit organization founded in 1910 that promotes programs and scholarships that help youth of color and the socioeconomically disadvantaged.

Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the Lincoln Foundations’ Whitney M. YOUNG scholars. The Whitney M. YOUNG Scholars Program recruits disadvantage but academically talented seventh grads in the Louisville area and mentors them for six years to ensure success into the college level. Some of the scholarship components include educational clinics throughout the school year, parental institutes, and summer institutes. For middle school scholars the summer institute is comprised of math and computer camps, while high school students get to spend two weeks on a college campus.

The Lincoln Foundation also has an after school reading and math program for at-risk children and the Western and Portland Libraries. Project BUILD (Business United in Leadership Development) is a month long summer program for high school juniors and seniors at the University of Louisville’s College of Business & Public Administration. It is similar to an introductory MBA program where the participants are introduced to various business classes.

The Education Opportunity Scholarship is an innovative program that will select at least on child a year who is at risk of not completing high school or college. The child is normally between the ages of two to three and will receive money for tuition, books, and room and board as needed from preschool through college.

You can purchase tickets that are good for the show and the after-show jazz performance at The Jazz Factory for $35. Premium tickets will also allow access to the August 30th performance of Kenny Garrett at The Jazz Factory. Contact The Kentucky Center at 502.584.7777 for details.

Ready for Dinner- What’s for Dinner in Louisville

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Every night Louisville residents must try and figure out the answer to one of life’s eternal questions, “what’s for dinner?” Many people decide to cook, grill out, hit a fast food place, order pizza, get carryout, or go to a sit-down restaurant. However, there is a company in Louisville that provides an alternative.

Ready of Dinner is not a restaurant but a business that provides homemade meals that are frozen and ready to cook at your home. You can log into their website www.readyfordinner.com to find out what the menu will be for that month or the next.
There are normally thirteen or fourteen different dishes that feature fish, chicken, turkey, pork, beef, or vegetarian ingredients. You can even customize the recipes to your individual tastes and needs.

There are various packages that you can buy and you can mix and match the dish choices anyway you want. Dishes either serve three or six people and packages range from three to twelve dishes. Package prices range from $75 to $225 with price per serving ranging from $4.17 to $3.13. The dishes are the main course, but they come with recommendations for side dishes. Dish choices do change every month, but favorites return to the menus often.

Once you choose your package and dishes you can schedule to go to a session and assemble the dishes yourself or you can pay an extra $25 for a stand-in chef to do that for you. They also have a delivery option or $20.

When you get your food home it goes into the freezer and can last for several months. You simply take the number of servings out the night before you want to cook them and then heat them up in the oven on the stove.

I have tried many of the dishes that Ready for Dinner offers and they all have been good to very delicious. This service is ideal for anyone who wants to have some ready-to-cook meals for the nights they do not have time to cook, older members of the family that may have trouble shopping and cooking, and for people who just do not want to cook. Gift certificates are also a great idea for people that have just had a baby, a serious illness, or have just gotten married.

So check out Ready for Dinner’s website and give your kitchen and decision-making skills a break.

Mimi’s Cafe

Monday, August 20th, 2007

I met a friend up at the new Mimi’s Café on Hurstborne Lane near Lowe’s and Barnes&Noble Bookstore last night for dinner and was pleasantly surprised. This restaurant is relatively new and I had not gotten a chance to eat there yet.

The atmosphere was very nice with comfortable booths and a décor that was reminiscent of New Orleans. We were waiting on promptly and a breadbasket that consisted of a small French loaf with butter and some delicious bread that tasted like it had pumpkin and raisins in it. It was very moist and tasty, and I would probably go back to Mimi’s just for that alone.

I ordered the seasonal Crab, Sweet Corn, & Asparagus Quiche, which was an individual quiche that was a very delightful blend of all the ingredients. It also came with a small side salad and a selection of fresh fruit. This was a perfect summer dinner choice, which was also quite healthy. Mimi’s offers a wonderful looking selection of desserts, but I was too full at that point to try any of them. My dinner came to $12 including tip and I thought this was a very good value for the food and service.

The menu at Mimi’s Café seems to be diverse and there were many items that I would like to try at another visit. If you are curious about the menu and prices you can check out their website at www.mimiscafe.com.

Mimi’s is open from 7am to 11pm everyday and servers breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
There is even a place on Mimi’s website that gives the recipes for five of their popular items.

Mimi’s also has a special program to help encourage academic and athletic achievement as well as positive attitudes in kids in Kindergarten through sixth grade. Teachers can request certificates of achievement or appreciation and wooden nickels from Mimi’s café that can be redeemed for a complimentary child’s meal.

I would highly recommend this restaurant and look forward to eating there again soon.

Hot Weekend Fun- August in Louisville

Friday, August 17th, 2007

freddy.jpg
“Photo courtesy of the Kentucky State Fair Board.”
Freddy Farm Bureau celebrated his 50th visit to the Kentucky State Fair this year.

We are right in the middle of August and the hottest weather of the year. My first recommendation for this weekend would be to stay cool and check out some of the many water attractions around the city. (see the 8/6/07 post)

The Kentucky State Fair is in full swing with many activities going on including the American Idols Live Tour on Friday at 8pm. Saturday night will features Trace Adkins at Freedom Hall and Saliva at Cardinal Stadium at 8pm, and the weekend will round out with the Oak Ridge Boys at 8pm on Sunday night. (see the 8/13/07 post)

If staying indoors and watching movies sounds like a good way to keep cool, you may want to stop by the Fright Night Film Fest that is being held this weekend at the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center. This film festival will show over fifty selected independent horror films, followed by an awards banquet on Sunday at 7:30pm.

If you are more of a book than movie fan then head over to the book sale at Locust Grove. Thousand of new and used books will be on sale for just a couple of dollars each. It is being held in the auditorium from 10am to 4pm both Saturday and Sunday.

If you would rather listen to some classical music The Louisville Bach Society’s annual free summer concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church.

Also don’t forget the Brides Against Breast Cancer (see the 8/14/07 post) and the Tux & Tails (see the 8/15/07 post) charity events this weekend.

Make sure to have some fun this weekend and stay cool.

Tux & Tails- Saturday’s Gala to Benefit the Kentucky Humane Society

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

NewYears2004_004.jpg
Velcro is Ready with his Tux

This Saturday, August 18, 2007 will be the annual fundraising event, “Shake, Rattle, & Roll’” for the Kentucky Humane Society. The Tux & Tails event will be held at Churchill Downs at the Millionaires’ Row. The event starts at 6:00pm with a silent auction, dinner, a live auction, dancing, and music provided by Jefferson Tarc Bus.

Tickets are $125 and all proceeds go to help support the Kentucky Humane society (KHS) and its programs. KHS does not receive any federal or state funding.

The Kentucky Humane Society is the largest animal welfare organization in Kentucky. KHS was founded in 1884 and its mission is to help improvement the treatment of companion animals by adoptions, education, and spay/neuter programs. It is a private, non-profit group that accepts any animal in need.

KHS has seven main programs to help fulfill there mission to make Kentucky a better state for animals and to prevent pet overpopulation. KHS’s admission program accepts all animals and the animals that are determined to be adoptable will be kept until a new home is found for them.

The SNIP clinic is a program that helps spay or neuter cats and dogs in order to reduce the number of unwanted and abandoned animals. It is located on Crittenden Drive but there are programs where volunteers will pick up pets and take them to the clinic. This program is focused towards people who may not have the money or access to get their pets fixed. Surgery and vaccination rates are fairly low, and there are financial assistance programs to help those who cannot afford this service otherwise.

KHS is probably best known for having pets available to adopt. There are always plenty of animals that need a great home, and KHS even has matchmakers to help you find the ideal pet for your living situation. Fees help go towards spaying or neutering, vaccinations, microchipping, education, and you get over $225 in gift certificates and coupons. Adoption fees also help KHS keep and care for animals with health problems. The main campus is on Steedly Drive or seven Feeder’s Supply locations have adoption days and times.

Having a well behaved dog or cat can greatly increase the chance that an animal will find a permanent home. KHS offers a variety of classes, locations, and times to train and teach your pet good behaviors.

The KHS’s Lonely Heart Club is a program for animals that have special needs and may be overlooked in the typical adoption process. If you have some extra time and love then one of these animals may make the perfect pet for you.

KHS has a various resources to help people search for a lost pet. There are also ways for people who have found a pet to list them so that their owners may be more likely to be reunited with their animals.

The Animal Rescue Department is KHS’s program that helps injured, abused, neglected, and at risk animals. They do pick up pets in need and can handle some injured wildlife. KHS has a Safe Haven program that works in conjunction with the Center for Women and Families, where they will take care of a pet that may be in a dangerous home environment. There is also has a Foster Care program in which volunteers will take care of special needs animals until they are ready for adoption.

So support the Kentucky Humane Society and check out the Tux & Tails fundraiser this Saturday night.

Do you have any great rescue or adoption stories? How did you find your pets?

St. Joseph Orphan’s Picnic- A Good Cause with Good Food & Fun

    Friday, August 10th, 2007

Tomorrow night is the 157th annual St. Joseph Orphan’s Picnic held at the St. Joseph Children’s Home on Frankfort Ave. This is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser and they always have a good crowd of people that show up to support St. Joseph’s, eat great food, and play some fun games.

The festivities actually start tonight with a Friday Night Live concert by Radio Daze and the Epics from 5pm to 10pm. Many of the food, beverage, and adult gaming booths will be open, and there will be a Corn Hole Tournament.

Saturday’s picnic starts at noon and will go to at least midnight with over 65 gaming booths and all sorts of food and drinks. Parking is limited and many visitors find a parking space on Frankfort Ave and walk, since attendence is expected to be around 60,000. All proceeds go to support St. Joseph’s and its programs.

St. Joseph Children’s Home was first built in 1850 to assist the many children that had been orphaned after the cholera epidemic in 1832. The first fair was held in 1851 to help pay for the building costs. In 1885 the home was moved to its present location on Frankfort Ave, which includes intuitional and housing facilities, forty acres of land, a full gymnasium, playgrounds, and ball fields.

There are four programs at St. Joseph’s that help the children in our area. There is a Child Development Center that is a specialized day care that accepts children from six week to preschool age. The staff is able to help and teach special needs children here. The Residential Treatment Program helps children that have been abused and neglected find a safe place to heal and learn. Their ultimate goal is to reunite these children with family, but if that is not possible a new family is found for them. The Foster Care and Adoption Program helps to find home for children with all types of special needs. There is also an Occupational Therapy program at St. Joseph’s.

So come out to Louisville’s oldest and best known charitable picnic tonight or tomorrow to help to support our city’s children and have some fun.

    Both events are at…
    St. Joseph Children’s Home
    2823 Frankfort Ave
    Louisville, KY 40206
